Fact Check
The NIA has issued helpline numbers to report suspicious Muslims.
This viral claim is false. The numbers listed in the message do belong to the NIA’s control room at its Delhi headquarters, but the agency has not issued any such message targeting Muslims.
A viral message on social media claims that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has issued certain phone numbers to report suspicious activities by Muslims, including those that involve “terrorist plots,” “love jihad,” “shrine construction,” or social media posts.
The message further claims that if any Muslim is seen chanting “sar tan se juda” online, users should take a screenshot and send it to the WhatsApp number provided to inform the NIA.

A Google search revealed no reliable news reports, government notifications, or official statements showing that NIA has instructed the public to report Muslims or slogans using these numbers.
A check of the NIA’s official website shows that the numbers mentioned in the viral post are genuine and belong to the control room at the agency’s Delhi headquarters. However, they were not issued for the purpose claimed in the viral message.

An NIA press release dated May 7, 2025, shows that two of the numbers, 9654958816 and 011-24368800, were shared to gather information related to the Pahalgam attack.
The appeal was directed at tourists, visitors, and locals, asking them to share any photos, videos, or information about the attack.

There was no reference to Muslims or any of the claims in the viral message.
A PIB Fact Check post from June 23, 2023, which described the viral message as misleading. PIB clarified that the numbers belong to the NIA, but the agency has not issued any advisory asking people to report Muslims or alleged slogans.
The PIB post also shared an NIA press note from July 7, 2022, which stated that misleading messages attributing such instructions to NIA were circulating online.
The NIA clarified that it had not launched any such helpline.
Messages referring to Muslims were “completely fake and malicious.”
The press note stated that the numbers circulated in the public domain were meant for reporting suspicious information related to ISIS activities. In 2021, the NIA had appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity on 011-24368800, but there was no reference to the Muslim community.
