Newschecker ran a reverse image search, which led us to this Hindustan Times report, dated November 9, 2015, featuring the same photo. “Occupants of the collapsed building vacated the premises after more cracks appeared in the aftermath of the October earthquake,” read the caption of the photo. According to the report, a four-storey building partially collapsed at an unauthorised colony in Delhi’s Safdarjung Enclave triggering fear of a domino effect on the adjoining building.
An Instagram post from October 15, 2023, featuring the same photo, further confirms that the viral image is not related to the 2025 quake.
Newschecker ran a reverse image search, which led us to multiple articles featuring the same photo, predating the recent earthquake in Delhi. The posts can be seen here, here and here.
According to one write-up, showing a different view of the building, the photo was taken after an earthquake that struck northwestern Turkey on August 17, 1999, killing at least 17,000. Although we could not independently verify the location of the viral image, we can confirm that the viral photo is not from Monday’s earthquake.
