Fact Check
The video shows an underground hydraulic garbage bin in Karnataka’s Belagavi.
The video circulating with this claim does not show the Belagavi project. It actually originates from Turkey. However, Belagavi has indeed installed underground garbage bins with hydraulic and sensor systems in recent years.
A viral post, sharing a video, claims that an underground hydraulic garbage bin system was launched in Belagavi, Karnataka, by BJP MLA Abhay Patil — allegedly the first of its kind in India, with automated sensors to alert sanitation staff when the bin fills up.

A reverse image search on the keyframes of the viral clip led us to a YouTube video uploaded on August 27, 2013, by a Turkish channel named Hidro-Mak. In that video, identical scenes of garbage being lifted from an underground bin into a truck can be seen.

The truck in question bears the label “Üsküdar Belediyesi” — the name of a municipality in Turkey — and the registration number 34 EF 4247, confirming its Turkish origin.

While the viral video itself is old and unrelated to Belagavi, the concept of underground hydraulic dustbins is genuine and operational in the city.
According to a Vijayavani report (Dec 10, 2022), 18 such high-tech dustbins were installed across Belagavi South constituency at a cost of ₹1.56 crore under the MLA’s development grant. Each bin, equipped with sensors, costs ₹6.5 lakh, and a dedicated vehicle worth ₹80 lakh has been deployed for garbage collection.
Similarly, AllAboutBelgaum (Dec 9, 2022) reported that MLA Abhay Patil inaugurated what he described as India’s first underground dustbin with sensors at Sri Basaveshwara Circle.
In ETV Bharat (Mar 28, 2025), it was confirmed that these dustbins have been functional for two years and are planned to expand into Belagavi North soon.
Belagavi has indeed installed underground hydraulic dustbins, but the viral video circulating online is from Turkey, not India.
Q1. Is the viral video showing Belagavi’s underground dustbins genuine?
No. The viral video originates from Turkey and shows the Üsküdar municipality’s waste system.
Q2. How do these bins work?
They operate hydraulically and are equipped with sensors that notify sanitation staff when they’re nearing capacity.
Q3. Why was the Turkish video shared with false claims?
It appears to have been reused online to exaggerate or misrepresent local developments in Belagavi.
